The following is a letter sent to SVUSD parents on December 17th, regarding the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.
On Friday, Dec. 14, there was a tragic shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., with 27 deaths, including 20 first-grade students.
Please be assured that, district-wide and school-by-school, our campuses remain secure and student safety continues to be a first priority.
All staff are informed and practiced in campus emergency procedures and in their collective roles within their campus emergency plans. Those procedures are reviewed regularly.
Should parents want specific information about the emergency plan at their child’s school, please contact the respective school principal directly.
Additionally, our district staff and board of trustees have a close working relationship with our local law enforcement agency, and we will draw on that collaborative relationship should an emergency arise.
We have taken steps to provide educators in our district with information so they are able to speak thoughtfully and meaningfully with their students regarding this terrible tragedy.
The following links are resources for parents to review as they speak to their children: nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/talkingviolence.pdf; or nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/talkingviolence_spanish.pdf.
For parents with no access to a computer, hard copies will be available in the school office.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, communities and educators who have been tragically impacted by this event.
