At the Business Education Roundtable held in late spring, the Sonoma Valley Chamber of Commerce was treated to amazing presentations and performances from fourteen of our SVHS students! I can’t even begin to tell you how well our students did and how many positive comments we received at the end of the breakfast. Our students were articulate, passionate and knowledgeable. But what else would we expect from a Sonoma High Dragon!?
Our SVHS Students of the Year Sarah Summers and Jon Weiland also spoke. Jon was particularly proud, and rightly so, of being the first Hanna boy to ever receive this honor. We also heard from two students who had great experiences with our newly implemented Freshman Teams (Alex Gustafson and Alejandra Alvarez). One of our outstanding Ag students, Suzanne Amaral spoke about her experiences in the Ag program and her latest achievement – Dairy Princess for Sonoma County. The student representatives included two of our three athletes who receive athletic scholarships – Annie Studdert (Clemson – soccer) and Alex Connor (Yale – track, cross country). Finally, we showcased the arts through the singing of Olivia Donald and the showing of a short film by Ky Newman. As the grand finale, Annie led the room with a rousing cheer.
All SVUSD Trustees were in attendance as were the numerous community business members. Clearly, when the community sees the true evidence of the work we are doing – the students – they become very excited about it and want to help.
Many thanks to Kathleen Hawing for all her efforts in making the morning so successful – we couldn’t have done it without her! And thanks to Chip Allen, Armando Ceja, Jennifer Yankovich, and the Chamber for allowing us to present to our business community.
